The Lead Addiction Medicine Physician ensures that MCC patients have access to evidence-based, interdisciplinary care for substance use disorder.  This role functions half-time as a primary care provider, providing care to a panel of patients. Half of the role is allocated to serving as a SUD provider leader, both delivering direct care to patients with SUD and developing and maintaining the policies, procedures, training, clinical support and internal and external partnerships necessary to facilitate high quality addiction treatment for MCC patients.

 

This role reports to the Site Medical Director at the provider’s home clinic and collaborates closely with the clinical leadership team (Medical and Behavioral Health Directors) to carry out their work.

 

  • $100k-$120k Signing bonus available for select applicants (specific program terms apply)
  • Salary range $225k-$$270/yr.

Responsibilities

Addiction Leadership (0.3 clinical FTE, 0.2 administrative FTE)

    • Functions as the medical lead on an interdisciplinary SUD treatment team at MCC, consisting of behavioral health providers, psychiatric clinicians, medical providers and case managers, to provide integrated Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment to MCC patients.
    • Works with the Chief Medical Officer and other Clinical Leaders to develop, update and implement standardized policies and procedures that support evidence-based SUD care at MCC.
    • Advises and supports the development of universal SUD screening practices and follow-up workflows for abnormal screens (SBIRT).
    • Leads the design and implementation of clinician training and support strategies for maximizing the adoption and use of appropriate medications and management protocols for addiction treatment at MCC.
    • Provides clinical consultation to MCC providers on management of substance use disorder, including medications for addiction treatment.
    • Supports the development of data and reporting to monitor incidence of substance use disorder and SUD treatment among MCC patients, as well as controlled substance prescribing and safe prescribing practices.
    • Contributes to the MCC Risk Management Program, providing input on root-cause analysis and risk mitigation relating to incidents and poor outcomes involving patients with substance use disorder.
    • Represents MCC at meetings and on workgroups and convenings regarding the care of people with SUD on the local, County and State levels.

Primary Care Provider (0.5 clinical FTE)

    • Provides and manages direct patient care, including physical examinations, evaluations, assessments, diagnoses and treatment for a specified patient population.
    • Prescribes pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens as appropriate to assessed medical conditions.
    • Refers patients to specialists and to relevant patient care components as appropriate.
    • Maintains an updated electronic medical record and completes clinical documentation in the Electronic Health Record, in accordance with documentation standards, within 72 hours of visits.
    • Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
    • Maintains a professional relationship with staff and patients.
    • Performs other related and/or necessary tasks to achieve clinic goals and objectives, as directed by the Medical Director. 
    • In addition to regularly scheduled shifts, works a minimum of three (3) 4-hour Saturday shifts per calendar year, providing medical care to patients within the standard scope of practice. Requirement begins after 90-day training period and compensation for coverage to be outlined in offer.
    • In addition to regularly schedule shifts, is available to respond to after-hour calls regarding critical lab results for adult patients throughout the organization for a minimum of 2 weeks per year. Requirement begins after 90-day training period and compensation for coverage to be outlined in offer.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Valid and unrestricted license issued by the Medical Board of California to practice medicine.
  • Board certified or Board Eligible in Specified Area of Medical Specialty.
  • 3-5 years of applicable primary care clinical experience, which may include residency in a directly related medical
  • Current registration issued by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) allowing the prescription of drugs.
  • Prior experience working in a community health or in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) desired, but not required.
  • EPIC Electronic Health Records (EHR) experience desired, but not required.
  • Minimum 3 years of addiction medicine experience or completion of an addiction medicine fellowship
  • Board Certification in Addiction Medicine desired, but not required

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English. 
  • Ability to Speak Spanish preferred. Alternatively, an interest and willingness to learn is highly desired.
  • Current BLS CPR Certification.
  • Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in area of expertise.
  • Ability to lead, advise, and train clinical professionals, including non-physician providers and/or students in area of expertise.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care. 
  • Ability to see an average of 20 patients per day for Full Time shift.
  • Knowledge of relevant drugs and non-pharmaceutical patient care aids and ability to prescribe dosages and instruct patients in correct usage. 
  • Knowledge of community medical diagnostic and patient care services in area of medical expertise. 
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards. 
  • Knowledge or ability to access and interpret Federal, State and Local regulations and initiatives relevant to the delivery of SUD treatment and care
  • Expertise in the use of Medication Assisted Treatment for SUD (including alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder)

Physical Requirements and working conditions

  • Successful candidate must submit to post offer, post-employment physical examination/medical history check.
  • Prolonged standing, walking, and prolonged periods sitting at desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times and move medical equipment.
  • Fine motor hand movements typical of performing standard primary care physician job duties.
