The OB/GYN Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive nursing care and coordination for patients with gynecologic and obstetric needs. This role involves assisting with in-clinic procedures, coordinating care for high-risk patients, managing patient communication, and performing administrative tasks to support seamless clinical operations. The RN also delivers patient education and ensures compliance with quality improvement guidelines. This position requires a focus on patient-centered care, health equity, and collaboration with healthcare providers.

Responsibilities

Patient Care Coordination

  • Coordinate exams and diagnostic procedures for patients requiring gynecologic surgery.
  • Provide care coordination for women with complicated or severe gynecological conditions.
  • Provides nursing case management for OB patients, specifically patients that have been identified as high-risk in the OB high-risk meetings.
  • Manage the “OB Follow up Log:” ectopic pregnancy, pregnancy of unknown location, possible miscarriage, and coordinate any non-obstetric follow up care postpartum.
  • Manage the “Desk:” Field phone calls from OB patients and answer questions regarding test results, medications, and common pregnancy concerns and other disease processes.
  • Manage follow-up care for abnormal PAPs and mammography results in alignment with QI guidelines.
  • Coordinate routine and complex scheduling for obstetric appointments and high-risk OB referrals.
  • Facilitate care with outside provider offices such as UCSF PDC Ultrasound Center, MHMC Labor and Delivery, antenatal testing, and genetic testing centers.
  • Perform telephone triage of medical concerns and provide appropriate advice.
  • Triage OB visits for issues such as preterm labor, severe nausea/vomiting, abdominal pain, and urgent mental health needs, etc.
  • Manage inbox messages from patients and providers.
  • Field phone calls from OB patients and answer questions regarding test results, medications, and common pregnancy concerns and other disease processes.

Clinical Procedures and Skills

  • Assist with in-clinic OB/GYN procedures, including LEEP, hysteroscopy, and manual vacuum aspiration, when needed.
  • High level understanding of birth control methods and sexual health education
  • Perform basic wound care, catheter insertion and removal, suture removal, and phlebotomy.
  • Administer medications as ordered by providers or per standing orders/protocols for treating STIs, pelvic infections, Rhogam injections, and pain management for office procedures.
  • Conduct fetal heart rate auscultation and provide patient instruction on home health monitoring (e.g., blood pressure and glucose).

Patient Education

  • Provide education on infertility workups, menstrual calendars, timed intercourse, and oral ovulation induction treatments.
  • Educate patients on cervical and mammography cancer screening, HPV, and abnormal PAP results.
  • Management of genetic testing options including cell free DNA and coordination of results.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Attend and participate in monthly OB/GYN such as Reproductive and Sexual Health Meetings, OB High-Risk Meetings and all RN meetings as needed.
  • Provide training for MCC RNs on OB/GYN topics to ensure uniform follow-up across the organization.  
  • Annual training regarding cervical cancer screening and how to discuss HPV/abnormal PAPs to patients.
  • Train and acclimate new OB/GYN medical assistants (MAs) and other support staff as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and updated health histories and health care gaps in the electronic health record (EHR).

Additional Duties

  • Manage the OB Follow-Up Log for conditions such as ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, or postpartum complications.
  • Cover for OB/GYN nurses as needed.
  • Assist in coordination of care for OB/GYN programs/groups (ex. Sweet Success) as needed
  • Monthly review of emergency crash cart
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Associate or BA/BS degree.
  • Active RN California License in good standing.
  • Current CPR/BLS Certification.
  • 1+ years of experience as an RN in any setting is required. 
  • 1+ years of experience in primary care women’s health (e.g., family planning, counseling, and GYN outpatient procedures) is required. 
  • Experience in a community clinic or primary care setting.
  • Familiarity or proficiency in using EPIC Electronic Health Records.
  • Experience with nursing care coordination/ case management.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication ability.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish medical Spanish highly desired and preferred.
  • Must be able to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Must be sensitive to ethnic and cultural differences and their relevance to health care.
  • Willingness and ability to follow clinical policies, objectives and mission established by regulations, grants, management or the Board of Directors.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and typing on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift to 15 pounds at a time
