  • Overview

    Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, the Lead Ob Physician provides medical leadership and oversight of MCC’s Obstetrics and Gynecology clinical services, focusing on the Obstetric program. Within MCC, the Lead Ob Physician works in conjunction with the Lead Gyn Physician, the Ob Program Manager, and clinic leadership to ensure quality Ob/Gyn services are delivered, including providing high-risk case-management, supervising the clinical practice of women’s health providers, reviewing and developing clinical protocols, and providing staff development activities.


    At Marin General Hospital, the Lead Ob Physician coordinates care between the outpatient and inpatient setting for high-risk Ob patients, both on an individual and programmatic level. Along with working collaboratively with the Ob Program Manager, providers, and management at MCC, the Lead Ob Physician will work closely with the Marin General Hospital Ob/Gyn department and leadership, WIC staff, Prima Ob/Gyn providers and Prima Medical Foundation to ensure good continuity of care between the outpatient and inpatient settings.


    At MCC, this role is a 0.75 FTE, with two days of clinic, one day administrative, and approximately 6 hours per week of additional meetings or OR time.   


    It is recommended that the Lead Ob Physician seek to contract separately with the Prima Hospitalist Group for Labor & Delivery on-call shifts at Marin General Hospital, where MCC patients deliver. The Lead Ob Physician is also expected to perform gynecologic surgery so must maintain admitting privileges at Marin General Hospital.

    Provide direct patient care in High Risk Obstetrics clinic.

    Provide direct patient care for gynecologic patients, including both outpatient and inpatient surgical procedures, as needed.

    Provide direct inpatient care through MGH Ob/Gyn hospitalist program.

    Participate in Marin General Hospital’s Ob/Gyn Department weekly meetings including Perinatal Review, Case Conference, Grand Rounds and Department Business Meetings.

    Proctor UCSF medical students in clinic and Labor and Delivery, with the option to apply to be Volunteer Clinical Faculty.

    Supervise the clinical practice of MDs, CNMs, and other advanced practice clinicians who provide Ob/Gyn services, including sharing with the Lead Gyn Physician 5 day/week coverage of task boxes and availability for phone or in-person urgent consultations, and reviewing and signing off on labs/studies that are outside of normal range.

    Develop, review, and implement clinical practice guidelines and protocols related to obstetric care.

    Facilitate staff development activities such as clinical practice updates and continuing education for CNMs, other obstetric providers, RNs, and MAs.

    Work with the Ob Program Manager to hold bi-monthly Ob Team meetings.

    Edit and optimize Electronic Health Record obstetric templates, as needed.

    Educate providers on compliance with state insurance documentation and billing requirements for obstetric visits.

    Review clinical practice by developing and participating in medical record audits, peer review, QI projects, and other practice review activities.

    Lead bi-weekly high-risk obstetric Case Management Conferences.

    Coordinate the care for patients on the “high-risk” list and provide an updated list bi-weekly to MGH L&D staff, perinatal social workers, and pediatricians.

    Communicate with UCSF Perinatology and other consultants on the care of complicated obstetric patients.

    Provide clinical supervision of Ob program personnel (i.e. Sweet Success RN and OB RNs).

    Maintain communication and partnerships with community partners who co-manage MCC pregnant patients, including Prima Ob/Gyn Leadership, MGH L&D Leadership, MGH Department of Radiology, UCSF Perinatology, County Mental Health, and the Marin County Jail.

    Participate in Marin General Hospital’s monthly Ob/Gyn Hospitalist Program Operations Committee.

    Participate in Marin Community Clinic’s monthly Clinical Leadership meetings and other meetings, as needed.

    Provide medical practice perspective and guidance to partner organizations and Marin County Health & Human Services, as needed.

    Ensure compliance with agency mission, HRSA reporting requirements, and CPSP Program requirements.

    Provide medical perspective and leadership in critical incident reviews and other medical practice aspects of risk management.

    Participate in QI activities and Medical Advisory Board, as applicable.


    A valid and unrestricted license issued by the Medical Board of California to practice medicine in the specialized disciplines of obstetrics and gynecology.
    5-10 years’ experience in obstetrics and gynecology.
    A current registration issued by the DEA allowing the prescription of drugs.
    A current BLS certification.
    The willingness and ability to follow clinic policies, objectives and mission established by regulations, grants, management or the Board of Directors.
    Must be Board Certified or Board Eligible working towards Board Certification.
    Proficiency in medical Spanish is a plus.
    Knowledge of the principles and practice of preventive medicine.
    Knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to medicine and HHS/HRSA regulations.
    Knowledge of the structure and operations of community health centers.
    Competency in dealing with people of various cultures and social status.
    Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, board members, patients and the general public.
