  • Overview

    Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, the Lead OB/GYN Physician provides medical leadership and oversight of MCC’s Obstetrics and Gynecology clinical services.  Within MCC, the Physician Lead of OB/GYN works in conjunction with MCC’s Women’s Health Providers to ensure quality OB/GYN services are delivered, including providing high risk case-management, supervising advanced practice clinicians, reviewing and developing clinical protocols, and providing staff development activities. 

    At Marin General Hospital, the Lead OB/GYN Physician provides coordination of care between the outpatient and inpatient setting for high risk OB/GYN patients, both on an individual and programmatic level.

    Along with working collaboratively with the Women’s Health Providers and Management teams at MCC, the Physician Lead OB-GYN will work closely with WIC staff, Prima OB/GYN group and Prima Medical Foundation to ensure good continuity of care between the outpatient and inpatient settings.  Approximately 50% time will be spent on Prima Group/Foundation activities (hospitalist work and), 20% on outpatient clinical work at MCC and 30% on administrative duties as described below.


    This role has potential to contract separately with hospital group, hospitalist Ob work possible.

    • Developing, reviewing, and implementing clinical practice guidelines and protocols for OB-GYN department
    • Facilitating staff development activities such as clinical practice updates and continuing education for OB-GYN staff.
    • Reviewing clinical practice by developing and participating in medical record audits, peer review, and other practice review activities; assists with clinical data review
    • Provide direct patient care in High Risk Obstetrics antepartum, and postpartum care
    • Provide direct patient care for Gynecological patients, both outpatient and inpatient surgical procedures as needed
    • Provide direct inpatient care through MGH OB/GYN hospitalist program
    • Provide Leadership to MCC GYN at meetings
    • May participate in High Risk Obstetrical patient Case Management Group as needed
    • May participate in Marin General Hospital’s OB-GYN Hospitalist Program Operations Committee Participate in Marin General Hospital’s OB-GYN Quality Committees (i.e. Perinatal Executive, OB Quality) and Continuing Education Activities
    • Participate in MGH OB/GYN Department meetings.
    • Supervises the clinical practice of MDs and Advanced Practice Clinicians providing OB-GYN services. Share 5 day/week coverage of task boxes and availability for phone or in-person urgent consultations from providers, RNs, case managers and hospitalists.
    • Providing medical practice perspective and guidance to primary care partnerships with other organizations, community partners, and Public Health Department
    • May facilitating and coordinating medical student/resident training opportunities
    • Providing medical perspective and leadership in critical incident reviews and other medical practice aspects of risk management. Participation in QI activities and Medical Advisory Board as applicable
    • Collaborates with MCC’s Providers of Women’s Health and PRIMA Lead OB Clinician regarding:
    1. nurse practitioner and nursing practice issues in clinical operations
    2. staffing and new hire practices within OB-GYN department
    3. implementation of new clinical practices
    4. train providers in new skills as needed (ex. colposcopy, first trimester ultrasound)
    5. creation of clinical protocols
    6. compliance with agency mission, HRSA reporting requirements, Title X program compliance, CPSP Program compliance and Public Health Department reporting
    7. compliance with state insurance Billing practices
    8. development and maintenance of Electronic Health Records OB-GYN Templates
    9. department budgetary planning


    This position requires: a valid and unrestricted license issued by the Medical Board of California to practice medicine in the specialized disciplines of obstetrics and gynecology. Experience in obstetrics and gynecology; a current registration issued by the DEA allowing the prescription of drugs; a current BLS certification; and the willingness and ability to follow clinic policies, objectives and mission established by regulations, grants, management or the Board of Directors. Must be Board Certified; Proficiency in medical Spanish is a plus.

    • Knowledge of the principles and practice of preventive medicine
    • Knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to medicine and HHS/HRSA regulations
    • Knowledge of the structure and operations of community health centers
    • Competency in dealing with people of various cultures and social status
    • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, board
        members, patients and the general public.
