Overview

The Medical Assistant will perform a wide range of duties in the medical office.  Tasks primarily (although not limited to) involve assisting in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a Physician, Physician Assistant and/or Family Nurse Practitioner. 

 

The Medical Assistant will have direct contact with patients and work closely with the front office staff. MA reports to MA supervisor and is also under the direction of the Clinic Director.

 

 

Spanish speaking skills are required for this position

Responsibilities

Escorts patients to the exam room, interviews patients, measures vital signs, such as pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight and height, and records information on patients’ charts.

  • Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients.
  • Drapes patients with covering and positions instruments and equipment.
  • Hands instruments and materials to doctor as directed.
  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments.
  • Inventories and orders medical supplies and materials.
  • Operates electrocardiograph (EKG), and other equipment to administer routine diagnostic test or calls medical facility or department to schedule patients for tests.
  • Gives injections or treatments, and performs routine laboratory tests.
  • Keys data into computer to maintain office and patient records.
  • Clean and disinfect operatory in accordance with department’s policy and OSHA guidelines.
  • Sterilize and disinfect instruments in accordance with department policy and OSHA guidelines.
  • Follow policy and procedures including universal precautions as defined by OSHA’s guidelines on Bloodborne Pathogens and Hazardous Materials standards.
  • Practice good people skills to maintain good public relations with patients and with fellow co-workers.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance to department policy and HIPPA guidelines.
  • Attend and participate in required meetings, training and educational programs.
  • Performs administrative responsibilities, including checking eligibility, verifying demographics, assisting patients with filling out necessary paperwork, and making up follow-up appointments.
  • Perform other related work as assigned.
  • Care Team responsibilities as outlined in the Care Team Patient Center Medical Home Procedures.

Qualifications

Must have a valid Medical Assistant Certificate from an accredited program

Must have current CPR certificate

Must speak SpanishPrior experience working in community health-care environment a plus

Must have ability to multitask and complete duties timely

Experience with NexGen Electronic Health Records Software a plus

Must be able to communicate effectively in English, verbally and written

Must be able to work flexible hours as needed, evenings or weekends if necessary
